Act of Remembrance and Project Launch

Act of Remembrance is led by John Owen, Rector of North Stoneham and Bassett Parish. Followed by refreshments.
 
Remembrance Day service at Binstead & Havenstreet War Shrine
Sun 9 November 2008, 2.30pm; Binstead & Havenstreet War Shrine, Havenstreet, Isle of Wight
The service is led by the Venerable Caroline Baston, the Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight.
 
Volunteering day at Avenue Park
Fri 14 November 2008, 10am-12noon; meet at the Shrine.
Practical conservation task, removing small trees to improve the open aspect of the parkland. For those aged 18 years and above only, please. All tools and gloves will be provided, please wear appropriate old clothing for the weather (wellies recommended!).
 
Open discussion
Mon 24 November 2008, 6pm; North Stoneham Church
A short introductory talk about the history of North Stoneham Park and the War Shrine by Harry Willis Fleming with the project team. This will be followed by an open discussion about the project and the future of the parkland. With refreshments.
 
Sun 7 December 2008, 2pm; meet at the Shrine
Avenue Park is a haven for wildlife, with its large old trees full of mistletoe and conkers. If you are lucky, you may see hunting kestrels along with numerous other birds. 30 minute introduction by Jenna Dewhurst, followed by supported exploration.

Artist Jane Wildgoose presents some of her recent work that explores ways in which people today associate memories and narratives with objects and places, relating these themes to the originating principles that motivated the Shrine's inception. With refreshments.

Display about the restoration of the Shrine, and the history of North Stoneham Park.
 
Talk: The Temples of Memory

Harry Willis Fleming talks about the Shrine, North Stoneham Park, the Willis Fleming Historical Trust, and his investigation into his family's history.

Walk: Guided exploration of Avenue Park in Spring
Sun 17 May 2009; 2pm; meet at the Shrine.
Avenue Park is a haven for wildlife, with its large old trees, long grass, and flowers, providing a refuge for invertebrates including ants, crickets, and bees. Come along and explore this micro-habitat. 30 minute introduction by Jenna Dewhurst, followed by supported exploration.
 
Sat 30 May 2009, 2pm. Tickets: £8; must be prebooked.
Guided walk with garden historian John Phibbs, in association with the Hampshire Gardens Trust. John Phibbs has made a particular study of Capability Brown's work, and has published many articles relating to the 18th century heyday of the English landscape style. Places on this walk are limited, and tickets must be pre-booked.
 
'Kaleidoscopiana Hantoniensia'
Saturday, 6 June 2009, 11am; meet at North Stoneham Church. Tickets: £18; must be prebooked.
An evocative tour in south Hampshire in the company of The Mausolea & Monuments Trust, taking in the Shrine and other secrets of North Stoneham; Southampton Old Cemetery and the Nicholas Mausoleum (1902); and the Greyladyes Mausoleum (c.1910). Surprises are guaranteed. Lunch will be provided, and is included in ticket price. Tickets are available from the Secretary of the MMT.
 
Talk: Street Shrines of the Great War
Wed 10 June 2009, 6.30pm; North Stoneham Church
Prof. Mark Connelly, University of Kent, author of 'The Great War: Memory and Ritual' (2002), talks about the wayside shrines that spontaneously appeared during WW1. With refreshments.
 
Family event: Thursday in the Park
Thurs 27 August 2009; 10am - 2pm
Picnic day for families, with walks and craft activities. Bring a picnic and enjoy the park!
 
Walk: Trees of North Stoneham
Sun 13 September 2009, 2pm; meet at the Shrine.
Jenna Dewhurst leads a walk through North Stoneham, themed around her favourite trees in the area. Jenna will also talk about some of the illustrious lost trees of Stoneham. Part of Heritage Open Days 2009.
 
Heritage Open Days: St Nicolas Church
Sat 12 & Sun 13 September 2009, 11am - 4pm; North Stoneham Church
St Nicolas is a listed church building of considerable historical importance, dating from c1600, with effigy tomb of Sir Thomas Fleming (d.1613), monument to Admiral Lord Hawke (d.1781), the Croatian Stone, and One Hand Clock. Part of Heritage Open Days 2009.

Walk: History of Middle Stoneham
Sun 4 October 2009, 2pm; meet at the Shrine
Guided walk with Hamble Valley Heritage Guides around Middle area, taking in Magpie Lane, Chestnut Avenue, Stoneham Lane, and comparing pictures of how the area appeared in days gone by, to how it is today. Led by Eric Reed.
 
Talk: Preserving the Past for the Future

Taking records of the Fleming Estate and Fleming family as an example, archivist Sarah Lewin talks about the work of the Hampshire Record Office, and the importance and interest of archives. Places are limited, and must be pre-booked.
   
Laying of the First Renovation Stone

As building work starts onsite at the Shrine, a small ceremony will mark the occasion.
 
Remembrance Day at the Shrine
Thurs 11 November 2010, 10.45am
The restoration work is nearing completion, but because the Shrine and its environs is currently a building site, there will be no Remembrance service this year. However, at 11am on the 11th we will be laying a wreath at the Shrine and observing the two minutes silence. Everyone is welcome. There will be tea/coffee available afterwards.
 
Special service
Sun 23 January 2011, 12 noon; Stoneham War Shrine
A special service to remember military personnel who are currently away from home on active service. Their families and friends are invited to attend. The simple service will be taken by Reverend Stephen Holmes.

An Ursula Moray Williams evening at Hampshire Record Office
Wed 11 May 2011, 7-9pm; Hampshire Record Office, Sussex Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 8TH; #7.50 per person, booking essential.
Colin Davison, author of a new Ursula Moray Williams biography, will speak about her links with Hampshire, including her years spent at North Stoneham Park, which inspired such books as Bogwoppit and Grandpapa's Folly and the Woodworm-Bookworm. Harry Willis Fleming will set this in the context of the story of North Stoneham House, built for his family in the first half of the 19th century.
 
Rededication of the Stoneham War Shrine, and the Stoneham Spring Fayre
Sun 22 May 2011, Rededication service at 12 noon; Spring Fayre from 2pm; Avenue Park.
On Sunday 22 May, the Shrine will be opened to visitors for the first time since its restoration. From 2pm there will be a country fete, the Stoneham Spring Fayre, held in Avenue Park, the Capability Brown parkland that surrounds the Shrine. Attractions will include the Belles of London City Morris, the Welcoming of the Cows, The War Graves Photographic Project, plenty of tea and cakes, and of course the Shrine itself. Earlier in the day there will be the Rededication ceremony at 12 noon. All are welcome.
