The excavations have revealed how the cast concrete retaining wall on the east side of the Shrine has been distorted by the roots of the beech trees (the former hedge).

IMG_5753-low.jpgOn the west side of the Shrine, the ground level has raised by several inches over the years.

Excavation of perimeter fence and footings

The Shrine originally stood on a levelled rectangular area, and today work started to clear and mend the foundations of the original iron fence and retaining wall that enclosed the Shrine. During the excavations, a piece of an original ornamental finial was uncovered.
